Smallish Dog Training

Precisely why dog lovers have this preconceived notion that small breed dogs are more difficult to condition than medium sized or large breed dogs, I will never be able to comprehend. Housebreaking a puppy, irrespective of its size should never be a problem.

Small dog training, is not all different from training a puppy of any other size. Whilst training any puppy will have its peculiarities, related to its breed, practically all other elements remain the same, and the approach to training the canine should remain the same, irrespective its size.

With that said, I will make an exception here, and agrree that small dog training may present difficulties in two areas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. However, this is not because the dog is small breed, but 10 times out of 10, because of the owner.

If a small breed pup is aggressive and is difficult to train, or if a smaller breed pup cannot be toilet trained or poses difficulties in being potty trained, it is the owner who has unwittingly contributed to this situation. Let us examine how and why.

Aggression.

Tiny dogs are loved because they are pretty, they are like playthings. Owners take pleasure in having their pet sit on their laps. This indulgence is where the complication starts. The natural aggressive characteristic of the canine, is to assert ownership over its sector, its food, even its leader; all canines want to be the alpha dog.

It is the violent streak in the canine animal that causes it to jump on to the lap of its master, particularly when there are lots of individuals gathered in the room.

This is a blatant act of hostility. Instead of admonishing the animal, every owner bar none, would cuddle the pup, despite the fact it jumped on to their lap uninvited, developing the aggressive streak in the animal. Therefore the owner has accepted the dog's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.

Growling and getting angry at a bigger dog is another clear act of hostility. To the owner, and even the onlookers, this is looked on as cute, simply because one dog is little while the other is big. Most owners pet and pat the dog instead of checking it, when it displays this aggression to a larger dog.

The above are but examples as to why smaller breed dogs are aggressive, and definitely not because small dog training is different or difficult.

Bathroom Training

Owners have a propensity to haul their small pets around no matter where they are, even at home and that renders it impossible to bathroom train them

It comes natural to the owners of small dogs to carry the animal to the place where the pooch should eliminate itself and then carry it back into the house.

It is this habit of carrying the puppy to its appointed toilet area that is the cause of all dilemmas. In addition, as the pup is by and large carried around so much it has no way of it informing or alerting the owner that it has to go the toilet.

Small dog training starts off with treating the dog as any other large sized dog. They have to be taken to their pooping area on a leash. If owners avoid carrying their small sized dogs they would have no troubles in training them.

Dog crate training, is the most interesting part of dog training, and so it should be, even in Small Dog Training.
