I am often astonished to see the how magnificent and outlandish the clothing industry has become. For some reason it is hard for me to fathom people and their utter love for clothes. Don't misunderstand me! I like a great pair of jeans as much anyone, but you won't catch me handing over hundreds of bucks for a pair of jeans, or even for plus size coats, which can be costly. Forget it. Not that my preferences have any effect on the style industry whatsoever. Oodles of young people are flocking to fashion styling and marketing colleges to better learn the business. Hey, I can not say that I blame them. There is plenty of money to be made there. I'm fairly certain Tom Ford is starving nowadays.

When I asked my teen-age daughter what field she wanted to pursue, she began rambling on about fashion styling and marketing. Hmm, big surprise! What teen-age girl is not interested in the style industry? And I thought - hey, possibly she can get me a deal on my plus size coats! As far as I can tell, they all go ga-ga over clothes, shoes, and accessories. Anyhow, she started taking a high school course in style design and marketing her senior year. Regrettably she detested it. Now she is a bit torn about her future plans. She still dreams of a job in the clothing industry, but is naturally worried about whether or not she'll like it. I told her to give fashion design and marketing another shot when she heads off to college next year. And nobody said she had to delve into this particular aspect of the style industry. There are a few options out there. She could market bathing suits, jeans, evening wear, plus size coats, wedding attire, avant garde fashion...the possibilities are end-less.

It is certainly a difficult business. If you really want to see the way things work, check out the Style net-work every so often in order to see real fashion designers in their world. Or you can watch that little reality tv series "The Hills." Even though the main person in this show has a good deal of cash coming in from her parents, she's getting a fine dose of the fashion design and marketing world. It is definitely not all glitz and glam at the outset, but I am sure any lucrative fashion designer can tell you that. You have to be willing to work really hard and compete with the many.
